1981 SCV
After 1980’s 7th place finish, 1981 brought a rejuvenation of the Santa Clara Vanguard…
The members and the staff vowed to return SCV to its winning ways. Along with this return was a return of Young Person’s Guide to drum corps.
Not noticed by many was drum major, Mike Zapanta, conducting the 3/2 section in two time signatures. The sopranos and Mike’s left arm were in 3/4 while the lower brass and his right arm were in 2/4.
1981 was the first year that Velco® was used for the tear-off fronts for the horn line. It was also the year that the timpani was moved from the field into the pit. The season closed with another championship and homecoming refreshments for the corps when they returned to Santa Clara.
