In 1982, the Vanguard was fresh off of winning DCI Finals the year before…
There were quite a few veterans in the corps that year and the staff took advantage of that by designing a very difficult show, which consisted of Third Symphony, Fourth Movement by Giannini; Capriccio Espagnol by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov; Slava by Leonard Bernstein; Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland and then a surprise ending of the Bottle Dance at DCI Finals. The corps rose to the occasion and performed the show beautifully, winning DCI Canada and DCI North back-to-back, but unfortunately had to settle for 2nd at DCI Finals.
Finals was again in Montreal, Quebec, Canada that year and has the distinction of being the “coldest” finals in DCI history, with a low that night of 39 degrees Fahrenheit and a high of only 59 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, it made for a very brisk evening. This made it much more difficult for the corps to tune their instruments prior to entering the stadium for their performances and then having to adjust to a warmer temperature inside. Unfortunately, the stadium also had a very overpowering echo, which made it difficult for the members to hear each other on the field, which contributed to the musical phasing that occurred during the bottle dance ending. However, the crowd was screaming so loudly that many people in the audience didn’t even realize that the phasing had happened.
