The Santa Clara Vanguard reimagined their innovative roots in their 2015 production, “The Spark of Invention”…
Inspired by the sweeping and spellbinding genius of inventor Nikola Tesla, the show rocketed through a kaleidoscope of ideas, emotions, and inventions. “The Spark of Invention” bares witness to the thrilling moment when an idea first springs to life… or when what was familiar transforms into something unexpected and new.
A provocative soundtrack emergeed through four distinctive pieces: J.S. Bach’s “Invention in A Minor”, “Virus Attack” by Amin Bhatia, “Pure Imagination” by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, and John Corigliano’s “Piano Concerto” conspired to create an odyssey of musical invention that journeyed from early Western classical to the ultra-modern.
Each of the show’s scenes immersed the audience within a single, dramatic ‘spark’ of invention. From electricity to technology… passionate music to breathtaking movement… props to musical effects and even the stage… the show itself became the very act of invention right before our eyes… revealing that spark within us all.
